(David Valenzuela, FISIOTERAPEUTA BOX55 FISIOTERAPIA DEPORTIVA,
ex fisioterapeuta de:
Valencia CF, MFk Dina de Moscu, MFK DINAMO de Moscu,
Villarreal CF y Levante UD).

“I was extremely fortunate to have had Ivan Lopez
as a guest in my home from 5 February until 20 April 2018.
Ivan agreed to participate at our
club’s 24 hour track event, scheduled for 14 & 15 April 2018,
at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane,
South Africa. Ivan arrived in South Africa
more than two months prior to our event.
I was at first surprised that Ivan have chosen
to arrive so long before the race date but I
soon realized that this was no ordinary
athlete with no average goals.
I thought at first that I had an opportunity to become a mentor for Ivan,
during his stay with our family,
by providing him with advice on how
to prepare physical and maybe more importantly mentally
for an important ultra-event.
Even as soon as our first week of
training together it became very clear,
that Ivan was destined to become one of the greatest
ultra-athletes in history. Motivating Ivan in preparing
for our event was not necessary at all because
he was the most determent athlete I ever came across!

I could only identify one weak spot in
Ivan’s mental armory.
He did not believe in his own ability to
achieve his full potential.
He was obvious confident that he had what
was needed to improve the Spanish 24 hour record but,
Ivan could not imagine
that his talent and ability was far more special and
unique that 249km in 24 hours.
I will never take any credit for assisting athletes
to go after and achieve brilliant results
but I hope that I have planted a little seed
in Ivan’s mind that he should back himself
when going for a great distance by
going-out hard and push himself mentally as far as possible.
I made a point during his stay in South Africa
to continuously remind Ivan that he
would become a major superstar as long
as he believes in himself. It is of little
consequence if the entire world believe in
one’s ability but you, yourself have any doubts.

I have worked and trained with a vast number
of very talented athletes during my career as
athlete and coach but Ivan is by a very long
way the most exciting ultra-athlete who I have
been fortunate enough to spent time with.
I was not in the least surprised that Ivan
became the 11th greatest 24 hour athlete
in history so soon after he have left the South Africa’s shores.
Ivan’s best results are surely still to come
and I believe that he will not only dominate
the ultra-scene of at least the next fifteen years
but he might just become equally as famous as the great Yiannis Kouros.

Ivan has enriched me and my family’s lives by
setting an example and proofing to us that hard
work will be rewarded. I was about to retire as
an athlete but has decided, after I have spent
time with Ivan, not to give up on my own personal
dreams but to rather keep on chase after these goals”.
(Johan van der Merwe, mejor ultra-fondista sudafricano
de la historia con 6 de las mejores
7 marcas de la historia en 24h de sudafrica,
destacando su récord de 258km)
